The government has said that it is moving to preserve the lucrative $17 billion industry, which has recently been beset by problems, including claims that some providers are exploiting foreign students. Under draft laws introduced to parliament recently, educational colleges will face tougher registration criteria. “This will raise the bar of entry into the international education sector,” parliamentary secretary Jason Clare said.

.

The skilled migration program is aimed at attracting overseas workers with skills Australian business needs. These skills, listed on the immigration department’s Skilled Occupation List (SOL), contribute to eligibility for permanent residency.

.

The new SOL, announced on May 17, is mainly made up of highly specialised professions and trades requiring either university training or long apprenticeships. Some trades on the previous Coalition government’s SOL, such as hairdressing and commercial cookery, have been excluded.

.

To all foreign nurses who wish to work and live in Australia together with their family, here’s how:

.

Nurses need to be in good health and have a certain level of education and experience. To work in a hospital or other health care area, nurses need to pass a health examination which includes a chest x-ray.

To work in Australia, nurses need to be registered or enrolled by the nurse regulatory body in the State or Territory in which they want to work.

The Australian Nursery and Midwifery Council (ANMC) website has more information including links to State and Territory nurse regulatory bodies.
See: Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council (ANMC)

Applicants for General Skilled Migration must obtain a skills assessment from the ANMC even if currently registered to work as a nurse in an Australian state or territory.

.

.

Visa Options for Nurses

.

Nurses are currently in high demand in Australia. There are excellent career opportunities with permanent and temporary work available in Australia. Most visa applications for nurses receive priority processing.
